As a long time member of AFTRA, I have stood by them many times…but as of late I have been horribly shocked by their conduct unbecoming (in my opinion) to protect the present and future of their actors, (ie: salaries, residuals, working conditions, etc.) which is what a “Guild” is supposed to be about! I feel that AFTRA, my own Union has let me down, big time and that it has not put it’s money where it’s mouth is…and it’s mouth has seemingly taken money out of my actors pockets, by (in order to get the “Gig”,) given actors residuals away in a deal…that has, in my opinion, undermined SAG bigtime and our present negotiating situation. I am stunned by some of what I feel are crazy shenanigans….on AFTRA’s part. Read actor, Bruce Thomas (regular on series KYLE XY AND HIS TRUTH ABOUT WORKING ON AN AFTRA SHOW! Pitiful!
What is possible?
Actors are too apathetic. Actors shouldn’t be making business decisions and negotiating. Actors are too flaky. Actors don’t care. Actors are too self-involved and oblivious.
I hear that crap all the time.
(Editors: This is what the AMPTP means when they say AFTRA is more “FLEXIBLE.” Read: Willing to give away even more between 3-year contracts.)
Dear Fellow Members of S.A.G. and AFTRA:
My conscience is killing me, and I can’t stay silent any longer. I can tell you from personal experience that it is in the best interest of all actors to Vote No on the AFTRA Exhibit A deal.
Two Unions both alike in diligence,
In the City of Angels where we lay our scene,
From former grudge break to new arguments,
Where un-civil tongues make civil mouths unclean.
From forth the fatal Egos of these former friends,
A pair of STAR-crossed options do arise,
Which unresolved, without compromise and resolution,
Shall clearly the whole Apple Cart capsize,
And cause confused dissension to remain.
The uncontained exchange of vituperation,
And the continued stubbornness of their misguided rage,
Which but their Members’ Votes, nought can restrain,
Is now the looming question of our age.
